Why Is My Pool Foamy? 4 Common Causes
Updated 2026-05-21
Foam on the pool surface is annoying but rarely dangerous. It comes from one of four sources, and each has a different fix. Here is how to diagnose what is causing yours.
1. Soap, sunscreen, and personal care
Most foam comes from organic compounds introduced by swimmers: shampoo residue, sunscreen, body lotion, or laundry detergent on swimsuits. These compounds act as surfactants and trap air bubbles at the surface.
Fix: shower before swimming, rinse swimsuits in clean water (no detergent), and run the pump longer to skim and filter the organics out. Chlorine eventually oxidizes them.
2. Cheap algaecide overdose
Many low-cost algaecides contain quaternary ammonium compounds (quats) that foam aggressively when used above label dose. If you recently added algaecide, this is the most likely cause.
Fix: stop adding algaecide. Run the filter and let chlorine oxidize the quats out. Foam usually clears in 2 to 5 days.
3. Low calcium hardness
Soft water (calcium hardness below 150 ppm) is more prone to foaming, especially in vinyl liner pools.
Fix: raise calcium hardness to 200 to 400 ppm with calcium chloride. This is a slow fix but resolves the long-term tendency to foam.
4. Pool fill chemistry
If you just refilled the pool and it is foamy, the source water may be the culprit. Some municipal water is treated with phosphates or organic compounds that foam.
Fix: let the pool circulate and chlorinate for 48 hours. Most fill-water foam clears on its own.

Is foam in my pool dangerous?
Not directly. But it indicates organics or surfactants that chlorine must oxidize, which can drop your free chlorine faster than expected. Test after foam appears.
Should I use a defoamer?
Defoamer masks the symptom but does not fix the cause. Use it only for an event (party tomorrow). Fix the underlying cause for long-term clear water.
How long does foam take to clear?
Soap and sunscreen foam usually clears in 24 hours with normal filtration. Algaecide overdose can take 2 to 5 days.
