Pool Filter Pressure Too High: What It Means and How to Fix

Updated 2026-05-21

Pool filter pressure climbs slowly as the filter catches dirt. When the gauge reads 8 to 10 psi above your clean baseline, it is time to act. Ignoring it eventually stops filtration entirely and stresses the pump.

Know your baseline first

Right after a thorough filter clean, write down the pressure reading with the pump on. That number is your baseline. Most residential pool baselines fall between 8 and 15 psi.

Anything 8 psi above baseline means clean or backwash. Anything 12+ psi above baseline means immediate action; the pump is straining.

Sand filter: backwash

Set the multiport valve to backwash. Run for 3 to 5 minutes until the sight glass runs clear. Stop, set to rinse for 30 seconds, then back to filter.

Replace the sand every 5 to 7 years. Old sand loses sharp edges and stops trapping particles.

Cartridge filter: rinse or replace

Remove the cartridge and rinse with a garden hose top to bottom (not bottom up, which packs debris deeper).

Soak in a cartridge cleaning solution overnight every 3 months to remove oils and sunscreen residue that water cannot rinse off.

Replace cartridges every 2 to 3 years.

DE filter: backwash and recharge

Backwash like a sand filter. After backwash, add fresh DE powder through the skimmer per the manufacturer instructions.

Tear down and clean the grids fully every 6 months. DE filters give the best filtration but need the most maintenance.

If pressure is still high after cleaning

Check the pump basket for debris. A blocked pump basket raises pressure across the system.

Check the pressure gauge itself. Old gauges fail and read high. Replace if you suspect.

Inspect for clogged return jets. A partially blocked return raises pressure.

FAQ

How often should I backwash a sand filter?

When pressure is 8 to 10 psi above baseline, not on a schedule. Too-frequent backwashing wastes water and reduces filtration efficiency.

Why does pressure keep climbing fast?

Either there is a high algae or organic load (clear the cause first), or the filter media is overdue for replacement.

Is low pressure also bad?

Pressure dropping below baseline can mean a clogged skimmer line, low water level, or a failing pump. Investigate immediately.
